In the late 1960's, there was a marked increase in writings on the "sociology of sociology". It is a reflection of the "anomie division" in sociology. Gouldner's "crisis", Friedrichs' "scientific revolution", Merton's "acute crisis" and Tiryakian's "an identity crisis", all can be regarded as different varieties of Durkheim's "anomic division" from the viewpoint of sociology as an institution.
In this paper, I concentrate on the fundamental meaning of anomie in sociology, specifically theoretical sociology, for individual sociologists and for the institution of sociology. Anomie in sociology means that the traditional hierarchy of sociological paradigms breaks down because new paradigms emerge, consequently influence of them diminishes in general. Therefore social relationships, especially informal and personal, among sociologists become more important and they influence not only the production of sociological researches but also the way they are evaluated. In this situation the content of each paradigm cannot control sociologists adequately as Gouldner and Fried richs adovocate. Therefore for each research the most influential is not "infra-structure" and "paradigms" but the concrete social relationships, namely the stratification system of sociologists.
Secondly, in the anomie, the codification of knowledge of each sociologist is more or less delayed by the co-existence of diverse paradigms. It is paradoxical that anomie promotes the democratization of prestiges of various paradigms but the latter tends to delay the codification of knowledge as a whole.
