Objectives: To investigate smoking status among recipients of public assistance benefits from N city and evaluate their recognition of smoking cessation therapy.<br>Methods: Self-administered questionnaires were collected from recipients of public assistance benefits living in N city.<br>Results: Smoking rates were as follows: every day, 33.7%; sometimes, 9.3%; total, 43% (male 54.5%, female 22.6%); past smoker, 32.6%; nonsmoker, 24.4%. A total of 78.4% of all smokers were aware of the availability of smoking cessation therapy. A total of 37.8% of all smokers were aware of the availability of new Health Insurance Cover for smoking cessation therapy. A total of at least 83.8% of smokers thought that the need to spend money on cigarettes was a burden. A total of 29.7% of smokers answered, “If no fee were applied for smoking cessation therapy, I would like to receive it.”<br>Discussion and Conclusions: Smoking rates among both male and female recipients of public assistance benefits from N city were high. Many smokers found spending money on cigarettes to be a burden and were interested in smoking cessation therapy. A support program for smoking cessation needs to be developed for these subjects. Cooperation among the fields of health, medical care, and welfare is required for effective delivery of the program.
