The purpose of this paper is the reconstruction of now obsolete functionalist's strain theory (or anomie theory) in the field of sociology of deviance. The decline of strain theory in the 1970's is an interesting phenomenon to study in it's own right (as Stephan Cole brilliantly demonstrates). However, in this paper, the fact that the decline of the theory was also the decline of the structural viewpoint in sociology (with the exceptions of some 'new' criminologists) is taken seriously.
The vantage point of strain theory is it's structural perspective which enables the theory to diagnose a fundamental dilemma of the stratified and fairly mobile industrial society, although Merton's original formulation of the theory was too narrow and too optimistic as regard to the solution of this dilemma.
Depending on Earl Hopper's work (social mobility, Basil Blackwell, 1981),a basic problem of the industrial society is conceptualized as 'warming up/cooling out dilemma.' With this on mind, strain theory is reformulated as relative deprivation theory. The structural cause of relative deprivation, the 'subjective' process of social comparison, and the various 'outcomes' of the experience of relative deprivation, which includes various types of deviant behavior, is examined in order to construct the theoretical framework. Thoughts and knowledge from diverse sources, such as Peter Blau's concept of social structure, studies of social stratification and comparative reference group, Theodore Kemper's theory of emotion, studies of relative deprivation and collective behavior, as well as the works of traditional strain theorists (such as Cloward and Ohlin), should be combined to construct more general and productive strain theory.
Only a glimpse of such a theory is presented here. For future empirical study along strain theory, two suggetions are proposed: as the indicater of 'strain,' (1) the distance detween 'normative expectation' (Hopper, ibid.) and achievement seems more promising than that between aspiration and achivement in 'micro' studies, and (2) the indice of inequality (such as Geni coefficient) should be used instead of indices of 'absolute poverty' in 'macro' studies.
