Abstract

This study examines the relationships between subsidiary performance and decision-making authority between headquarters, expatriates, and local employees in foreign sales subsidiaries. Previous studies discuss whether decision-making authority should rest with headquarters or subsidiaries, and with either expatriates or local employees. However, they have not discussed the relationships between subsidiary performance and decision-making authority by addressing all of these parties simultaneously. This study addresses this research gap using a questionnaire survey of 50 Japanese sales subsidiaries in Thailand. The results indicate that 1) placing a high level of authority with expatriates by decreasing headquarters’ authority is positively associated with a subsidiary’s performance, 2) placing a high level of authority with local employees by decreasing expatriates’ authority is negatively associated with a subsidiary’s performance, and 3) the proportion of sales to local companies weakens the negative relationship between local employees’ authority and subsidiary performance.
