In the middle of the Meiji era, Yamaguchi Prefecture established a unique system for advancement to Imperial University. The school system of Yamaguchi Higher Middle School and five preparatory schools for it (Yamaguchi, Hagi, Toyora, Tokuyama and Iwakuni schools) was ahead of the times in the education system of modern Japan. In this paper, the writer carefully examines the process of the formation and characteristics of these preparatory schools in order to investigate the operation of the Yamaguchi school system in the Meiji era. In conclusion, the five preparatory schools were special middle schools established only for the purpose of advancing to higher schools. The writer clarify the following things minutely in this paper. Firstly, about the measures Yamaguchi Prefecture took when the Middle-School Order was proclaimed in 1886. Yamaguchi Prefecture tried to continue its traditional education system and founded Yamaguchi Higher Middle School and five preparatory schools for it to make it possible for students to go to Imperial University in Tokyo directly. The writer make the process of its foundation clear. Secondly, about the educational purposes of five schools. The writer make it clear that five schools were not only the preparatory schools for going to Yamaguchi Higher Middle School but the indispensable schools to make the young students in Yamaguchi Prefecture go to Imperial University without wasting time. Thirdly, about the contents of school activities of five schools, for example, curriculum, textbooks, lessons, and so on. Thirteen subjects were taught and the level of learning was high enough to go on to Yamaguchi Higher Middle School. The existence of five schools has an important meaning in the educational history of modern Japan when we make a study of secondary education and going to higher schools.
