Description

This study examined the extent to which affect influences verbal behavior in a dyadic-conversation context, from the two different points of view of information processing and interpersonal motivation, using a quantitative analysis. Sixty-six participants viewed a relaxing film as a control and then an affective film. Affect was measured in two dimensions: valence and arousal. After viewing a film, the participants engaged in a six-minute dyadic conversation. The verbal behavior of the conversations was recorded and categorized by two independent coders. The results showed that high-aroused positive affect increased edification, disclosure and questioning. On the other hand, high-aroused negative affect inhibited them. Low-aroused positive affect was seen to increase acknowledgement. These results suggest that the relationship between affect and verbal behavior could be interpreted in terms of motivation to engage in conversation.
