Abstract

Recently, the number of resident foreigners and intermarried families has increasing in Japan. However, little attention has yet to be paid to the inheritance of the minority languages of parents. To investigate language use in intermarried families and minority language heritage, a questionnaire and interview survey was conducted of 35 Korean mothers married to Japanese citizens and residing in Japan. The results showed a noticeable difference between the language use of the children of Japanese mothers residing in South Korea. and that of the children of Korean mothers residing in Japan. The children of the Korean mothers were less likely to use Korean to their mothers. This study also revealed that “understanding and support in the family”, “the existence of community”, “language status” and “government support” are factors that influence language heritage.
