<p>In explicating the theoretical significance of metacommunication, this paper describes how this concept can be used to analyze various sociolinguistic phenomena, ranging from the micro to the macro level of analysis, encompassing translation, narrative, language education, language and law, literacy, language shift, linguistic and cultural contact, and linguistic imperialism, all of which, it will be shown, can be brought together in a coherent and comprehensive sociolinguistic framework, based on the notion of metapragmatics.</p>
