Abstract

This study investigates the factors which influence the tendency to draw compliments, and examines similarities and differences between Japan, Korea and China, with the aim of contributing towards the promotion of building and maintaining harmonious interpersonal relationships. Undergraduate students were asked to complete a 20-item questionnaire consisting of compliments made to close friends. The data (n=493) were examined by factor analysis. Three factors, “uniqueness of evaluatee factor,” “personal relationship factor,” and “possessive property factor” were extracted through EFA, and verified as having acceptable construct validity through CFA. Furthermore, ANOVA and multiple comparison were conducted on the subscale scores, which were the sum of scores of items under each factor. The results showed that no significant difference was found in the scores for the “uniqueness of evaluate factor.” On the other hand, in regard to the “personal relationship factor,” Korean and Chinese students' scores were significantly higher than those of Japanese students, and in regard to the “possessive property factor,” the scores of Chinese students were significantly higher than those of Japanese and Korean students. These results are discussed from the perspective of how they differ from those of previous studies on compliments and values.
