Description
In the Great East Japan Earthquake (March 11, 2911), lapan experienced a 'risk society', which Beck (1986=1998) and others point out. The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in particular, has raised various issues after a disaster occurs such as evacuation plans, decontamination methods, safety of food and water, health hazards, harmful rumors, government measures, energy problems and environmental problems. When people deal with "new types of risk" like these, media coverage becomes the main source of information. In this study, we addressed the "problems with radioactive cesium-contaminated beel" as a case of "new types of risk". By using the quantitative text analysis, we examined how the frames ol coverage, in other words, the media frames are used when media coverage gives people the information on "new types of risk". As a result, eight media frames were emphasized in the newspaper report on the "problems with radioactive cesium-contaminated beef" such as "present situations", "measures", "causes", "requests", "damages", "danger to human body", "food " and "nuclear disaster". In addition, it was discovered that the number of appearances of these eight media frames were changing in chronological order. From this result, we found that the coverage on the "problems with radioactive cesium-contaminated beef" has a reliance on the eight frames, so change of these frames in chronological order gives a story line the coverage contents of risk events and the frames were packaged in a short period. However, there was a question raised regarding whether distributing information by packaging media frames in a short time is suitable or not to instill the danger of "new types of risk" to people who live in 'risk society'.
