Description

In Okinawa the shamans called “yuta” express a painful history of the islands literally through their physical pain. As an anthropologist I describe their way of bodily narration in academic papers and make presentations on the subject as I will do at this conference. But what happens when bodily narration is turned into anthropological description which is again changed into another sort of narration, that is, presentation? This has much to do with the larger problem of representation. Thus from my own experiences I will show both the merits and limits of such interchangeability between narration and description.
