Description
The Uta poems in Tosa Nikki are not to express the author's feelings but to admire the object of the Uta poem no mitter if it is a person or a thing. A nature-describing Uta is to admire the land. A eulogy poem is a requiem to praise his lost daughter. By singing these land-praisig poems or requiems, people try to exordse anxiety and grief from their travel and secure the safety of a voyage. However, when these poems are included in the diary, the magical nature of the poems takes on objectivity, because the author becomes conscious of the third party, the reader. In this respect, Kino Tsurayuki, the author of Tosa Nikki is a remarkable figure during the transition period.
