Description
I had my seventh grade students discuss Shishiodori no hajimari(The Beginning of Deer Dance). The abundant use of dialect in the story fascinated the students enough to draw them into the world of the deer. The students understood the feelings of Kaju, who becomes assimilated with the deer. Kaju begins to understand what the deer say but is still rejected by nature. The deer's viewpoint enables the reader to experience senses which have been lost in everyday life. Simultaneously the readers were able to sympathize with Kaju's sense of alienation. I call this practice "Playing in the Imagery World", the purpose of which is to have students experience the world of fiction.
