説明

Myoe's biography recounts several instances of austerities involving mortification of the flesh. Their progression reflects Myoe's development. In his youth he had no personal basis for the performance of austerities. During the period of his wanderings in Kishu, amputation of the right ear and repeated plans to go to India were also instances of religious austerities, by now guided by purposefulness. When he settled down at Takayama Temple, he no longer attempted to mortify his flesh, but his passion for penance remained unabated. What was it, then, that sustained Myoe in his performance of religious austerities? Surely one source of support must have been the passage teaching the sacrficial rite in the Kegon Sutra, one of the scriptures Myoe studied most devotedly. The words of Sakyamuni expressing devotion to his father must have been a continual source of religious inspiration to Myoe.
