Abstract
In the first decades of the eighteenth century, the popular literary genre of ukiyozoshi fostered many examples of quoting Chinese annecdotes, not from the original Chinese texts, but from the anthologies of famous ancient annecdotes or Japanese narrative texts (kanazoshi). The present paper demonstrates that Kino Kaion's joruri plays also took advantage of the anthology of famous annecdotes, Kunmoukojiyogen, and the Japanese narrative (kanazoshi), Shingoen, to incorporate ancient Chinese annecdotes into their plots. If a further study reveals the familiarity of such a practice, it will also clarify the significance of the anthologies of famous ancient annecdotes and Japanese narratives (kanazoshi) as a medium in literary history.
