Abstract

Nakajima Atsushi's Meijinden is written with the purpose of presenting the antithesis against the preconception that a master embodies the pure dedication to art by revealing that the extreme pursuit of mastery reduces man to the state of idiocy, indicating the silliness of such an idolization of a master. Putting this work in its contemporary literary context, in comparison with Kawabata Yasunari's Meijin, one realizes that Nakajima wrote this story in order to criticize the blind worship of "pure dedication" in Japanese society during World War II, emphasizing the importance of rejecting self-indulgence and maintaining critical sobriety.
