Description

It is quite rare that Jippensha Ikku reveals his personal opinions in the substantial body of his writings. The reticence must be due to the discipline which governed his early life before he became a fiction writer. In this paper, I will trace, in several signs, the process in which Ikku overcame his past attached to the sites of Fuchu, Edo and Osaka through the act of writing Hizakurige, to establish his identity; through this task, I will discuss the special significance of writing Hizakurige to Ikku.
