Abstract

Mieko Kanai's discourses, having constantly chosen "writing" for subject, place at their center the ontological pursuit of fiction which constitutes the essence of literature. In the literary climate where many writers have lost their impetus and turned upon personal feelings for reflection, Kanai's literary style shows an ultimate insight into the nature of fiction, and for that reason cannot be overlooked in the serious discussion of fiction. This essay explains Kanai's literary sphere by focusing on the framed narrative structure of her early short story Usagi (June, 1972), gradually shifting to the general consideration of the significance of "reading" fiction.
