Abstract

I will consider how the act of misreading is made in literature, comparing Sohei Morita's Baien with Raicho Hiratsuka's Toge. The misreading in Baien was deeply influenced by the historical moment of reading when the status of literature was reorganized and the homogeneous stratum of the reader was formed. So its "weak" misreading is commonplace and poorly productive of subsequent interpretations. On the other hand, Toge resists such homogeneity of reading so completely that its misreading is "strong" and open to infinite interpretations. I will argue the historical meaning of these two kinds of "misreading."
