Abstract

In Rashomon, the crow, the old woman's resemblance to which is emphasized, does not exist merely to produce a sinister effect. The crow and the old woman constitute together another pole within the Kyoto society that stages the drama. I have attempted to reflect on how Rashomon defines the old woman as an internal part of the town of Kyoto, opening the tale through her viewpoint, to close it with the utterance and the act of "robbery" by the Genin.
