Abstract

By focusing on "sweat" and "tears" in Genji-monogatari and Sagoromo-monogatari, here I will examine what function those secreting fluids play in each of the stories. A different treatment of them in each of the texts, although very slight and subtle, reflects their different styles in narration and perception. It is also related to the two authors' different approaches to the representation of body and clothing as well as to the description of the complicated relations among court ladies.
