Abstract

The image of darkness such as the dark bottom of a well frequently appears in Haruki Murakami's work. It is often used in Nejimaki-dori-chronicle too, but in some different way. For the author is more concerned there with historicity through his cinematic experiences, from seeing The Silence of the Lambs in the U.S. to staying in the dark interiors of the movie theaters he frequented in his youth. Those experiences have a great influence on the image-making of darkness in the text.
