Abstract
The old mode of reading is still dominant in literature teaching. In this way of reading, the author is regarded as an omnipotent being who originates and dominates his or her work like a god. As a result, language is defined as something substantial which the author can use at will like a tool to express his or her ideas. But a literary work is an independent structure of language which is not always controlled by the author. In other words, it has otherness, something uncanny in its peculiar linguistic system. To give students an experience of finding such otherness in literature, instead of the old author-oriented reading, a kind of meta-reading is needed. Here I will present my own experiment of meta-reading in high school reading class in which I used "Gon-gitsune" as a text.
