Abstract
In Manyo-shu, mourning often enables one to see a man or woman who one loves. Indeed, in old popular belief, mourning had a supernatural power. It was believed to be a magical act by which the mourner's soul could be separated from body and sent to wherever he or she wanted. Thus the unison of two souls called "tama-ai," which is seen in some dream poems of Manyo-shu, can be said to be a sort of wish-fulfillment by mourning.
