Abstract

It has been often said that Junichiro Tanizaki made an attempt to preserve the declining tradition of Japanese aesthetics in the imaginary world of Sasame-yuki. The novel, however, is not so backward-looking. It was written in negotiations with oppressions and threats in the age of imperialism, and the author had to strategically deal with them in the form of allegory. Thus in the scene of the flood or even in the episode of Yukiko's fiasco at the marriage meeting, the "present" was allegorically disguised and represented.
