Abstract

Working women at the court didn't usually make poems, but according to the tenth part of Ryojin-hisho-kuden-shu, there were lower-class maids who sang "imayo" songs for the Ex-Emperor Goshirakawa. It points to a shift in the position of maids in the court culture of the late Insei Period. Indeed, at that period, chamber and kitchen maids succeeded to and performed in their own way the ritualistic work that had been done by court ladies. In this article, I will examine the roles, both new and traditional, of those lower-class women as promoters and preservers of court culture.
