Abstract

Although Tanni-shō is generally thought to be written by Shinran's disciple Yuien, the style of writing indicates that the real author is Kakunyo, the great grandson of Shinran who practically founded the Jōdo Shinshū Sect. Moreover, the religious discourses Kakunyo compiled in book form were dictated to him not by Shinran himself but by Yuen. Then we should think that in Tanni-shō there is recorded not what Shinran said but what his followers believed the master would have said.
