Abstract

As a writer I haven't changed a bit since the great earthquake and the nuclear disaster, but to my dismay I very often hear people say that things look quite differently now from what they used to do. I wonder whether such a change of values is spontaneous or socially imperative. Anyway it should be one of the most important literary duties to cause a change of values by means of not shaking but writing. But unfortunately few writers can do what the earthquake could do, for just like me they are now too conservative to radically change the old way of writing, much less the established way of seeing, thinking, and living. Language is the only medium through which the real cognitively emerge to us. In other words, the real, linguistically constructed, can be reworked anytime through the very medium. And, I repeat, we writers must do such subversive work. Here I will consider what we can do in this post-earthquake age.
