Description

Yuho Kikuchi's Ono-ga-tsumi is generally regarded as a melodramatic story about the tragic fate of a married couple. But while examining how the readers responded to the story when it was first published as a newspaper serial in the Osaka Mainichi Shinbun, I have found that they were more interested in the young brothers by different fathers than in the couple themselves. Indeed, also in its stage version, the audience was greatly touched with the scene of the children's death by drowning. Thus the story had a sort of educational effect not only on the fictitious parents but also on actual ones who read it in the newspaper or saw it on the stage.
