Abstract

Although it is quite wrong to blindly distrust any theoretical approaches, theory must be carefully handled because it is very often used in such an indiscriminate fashion that at last what should be a means becomes an end. In other words, every time you want to apply some theory to a text, you must take into account the text's own theory or method. This article will first examine the method of making the waka poem "Fuji-no-uraha" rendered by the minister's nurse in Genji-monogatari. Then a most suitable method will be found to interpret the narrative and social role the poem plays in the story.
