Description
Why do learners of Japanese often sound "unnatural?" This paper, dealing with Chinese learners, points out one of the possible causes of this "unnatural" impression observed in their speech and analyzes it by looking at the discourse structure, especially cohesion. The analysis reveals that learners tend to miss out cumulative conjunctions and additive conjunctions continuously and that makes their speech plain connection of simple sentences, which is "unnatural." Therefore, it is advisable to lead learners in the conversation class: (1) to practice creating complex sentences by adding connective particles; (2) to understand only sentences of continuing action/movement or cause and effect sentences can be connected by connective particles.
