Abstract

In this article I will demonstrate the value of Haruki Murakami's short story "Birthday Girl" as a teaching material. The story is told by a male narrator who talks about himself in the form of a story of his girlfriend. The old method of character analysis doesn't work well for the explication of such narrative construction, for it shows not how the story is structurally formed but merely what the characters stand for. Any teaching method of literature must be constructed on the analysis of narrative function.
