Description
In Sansho-dayu Anju drowns herself in the water after she helps Zushiou to run away from the slave trader. It has been often said that Anju sacrifices herself for her brother because she cannot endure hardship any more, but I want to argue that she willingly does so praying for his better fortune as a pious Buddhist. Such a religious tone of the story comes from the sourcebooks the author Ogai Mori turned to; not only the famous Genroku edition of Sansho-dayu but also the historical writings of the slave trader and the revised edition of The Dictionary of National History.
