Abstract

In spite of her important role in Genji-monogatari, Onna-Sannomiya is generally believed to be an enigmatic figure who seldom speaks her mind. Closely reading the story, however, one can find not a few passages that denote her thought and feelings. In them can be traced the changes that her mind undergoes at critical moments such as marriage to Hikaru-Genji, an illicit love affair with Kashiwagi, and her final retirement into religious life. As will be shown in this article, her self-consciousness called "mi" or "ga" most passionately comes to the fore after having an affair with Kashiwagi, but ultimately it disappears when she enters a sequestered life.
