Abstract

In 1930 Sei Itō began to work on a new sort of psychological fiction that could, he hoped, compete with the films and proletarian literature. For his literary experiment he turned to Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis and James Joyce's “stream of consciousness,” but he was also as greatly influenced by Marcel Proust whose novels he “read in English translation.” This article will examine the Proustian heritage found in his short stories “Sakkaku-no-aru-hairetsu” and “Acacia-no-nioi-ni-tsuite” to show how it helped much to shape his literary outlook.
