Abstract

While literacy means the ability to use language at will, it is strictly conditioned by linguistic and social codes that any literate person must follow. In this sense, literacy has not only communicative function but also disciplinary one. But isn't it possible to strategically deploy it as a more creative means? Because of its esoteric and subversive style of writing, Tsuga Teisho's "Hitsuji-gusa" points to such a liberating aspect of literacy.
