Teaching effectiveness can be improved by classifying students into different classes according to their scholastic performances. Placement test score functions as a major index to help teachers differentiate students more critically than other subjective devices, such as human observation and inquiries. Placement test score is of special significance in remedial education, because it not only reveals those problematic knowledge areas that students need to compensate for, but also provides evidence for teachers' judgments in classifying students and selecting teaching materials and instruction methods. This paper offers a quantitative study about students' placement test scores in an English remedial program, clarifying the interactive algorithm between students' placement test scores and the progress rates in their scholastic performances in remedial education, proposing a logistic model and for more rigorous controls over the operation of student classification. This study throws lights on the necessity and importance of creating an evaluation system for textbooks and teaching materials, so that teachers might become largely facilitated in selecting appropriate textbooks for students of remedial course.
