Abstract

The 492 outpatients without abnormal data in chemical examination were determined in serum total tocopherol values by fluorometric method. On the strength of this result the clinical reference range of serum total tocopherol was calculated by the method of Hoffmann. It was decided that the clinical reference range was 0.67 to 2.35 mg/dl (the mean was 1.26 mg/dl) in male patients, and was 0.58 to 2.40 mg/dl (the mean was 1.18 mg/dl) in female patients. There was no significant difference between the sex. It was found that the distribution curve of serum total tocopherol represented positive skewness, but after logarithmic transformation the curve followed a Gaussian distribution very closely. The 21 subjects of them were determined in serum tocopherol homologues by HPLC. It was ascertained that their serum tocopherol consisted of 86.43±.4% of α-tocopherol, 13.6±3.4% of γ-tocopherol and non detectable β- and δ-tocopherols. It was revealed that a few cases of chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis had low levels of serum tocopherol.
