Abstract

The aim of this paper is to determine the efficacy of "social cognizance" in guiding a reading activity of social scientific exposITOry texts. Dr. Nobuyoshi Morita has discussed that the structures and levels for reading exposITOry texts could be classified into two types and four levels as follows: Structure I (Reading the texts literally) and Structure II (Reading the texts critically); Level 1 (Reading the contents of the texts literally), Level 2 (Reading the logical structure of the texts literally), Level 3 (Reading the contents of the texts critically), and Level 4 (Reading the logical structures of the texts critically). With a social scientific exposITOry text, a reader needs to employ Structure II and Level 3 strategies which are emphasized least. In order to properly understand a text which is structured by scientific logic, some knowledge of the issue is required based on reading other texts from multiple sources. In this paper, a text analysis demonstrates the necessity of "social cognizance" in a reading activity. I constructed a model of reading utilizing the "social cognizance" model by Dr. Takaharu Moriwake, and I have proposed a new perspective for the guidance on reading social scientific exposITOry texts.
