The Kondo Hall in the Horyu-ji Temple, the oldest wooden building now extant, erected in the 670's, has in its details some original forms, the counterparts of which cannot be found even in China or Korea. Those forms usually go under the name of the Horyu-ji style. The most remarkable of them is its cloud-formed brackets. They are characterized by a peculiarly curved shape which has scrolls carved on the surface. Completely they have lost their own ordinary system of square framing. Just, they are very non-tectonic and highly decorative, being removed from their original structural purposes. Special attention should be paid to their dynamism in curvature, and also to "Will to Deformation" that has resulted in this dynamism. Here we can see an unmistakable manifestation of the baroque character. The simplicity and the purity have hitherto been considered as the chief features of the Horyu-ji style, but now we may rather say that this baroque character is its truly essential nature. As a historical fact the Horyu-ji style could be completed only through the influences of early Tang dynasty style, but "Will to Defomation" itself has been our national Art-Will since olden times. The cloud-formed brackets may be said to symbolize Japanese fine arts in the Hakuho-period (the latter half of 7th century).
