Abstract
Laos, located in Indo-China Peninsula, is a small country with the population of 4,830,000, often neglected and is hardly known to the rest of world. For this country, however, Japan has been a top donor whose aid in the field of human resource development will make the relationship between both countries tighter in the future. In this paper, I will report on "media and education" in Laos, in comparison with that in Thailand, based on research done in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Laos has a big problem in education; the literacy rate is only 58% in this country and you will find that Laos has very few schools and teachers, especially in rural areas. Because of these circumstances, media, in place of schools and teachers, is expected to play a key role by providing high-quality educational programs to Lao citizens. According to the media survey conducted in Vientiane, people watch Lao National Television more than I had expected and is commonly believed. In terms of quality, on the other hand, Lao people think that domestic programs are inferior to Thai programs.
