Abstract

The objective of this study was to clarify the actual state of drawing education in Japanese primary schools in the late Meiji Era by investigating the teaching methods and guides employed at the primary school associated with Tokyo Aoyama Normal School. Though just a single school, it is evident through an analysis and comparison of drawing guides that it exercised considerable influence nationwide. Specifically, comparison was made with Shintei-gacho (government-designed new drawing textbook). The results indicate that the state of drawing education at the primary school associated with Tokyo Aoyama Normal School was more advanced than recognized in Shintei-gacho and was of a higher standard than required by educational guidelines of the period.
