Abstract
Rotating bending fatigue tests of bearing steels having compressive residual stress m a surface were carried out. Compressive residual stress was given by two methods of the roll processing which were using a ball shaped tool and a roller shaped tool Fatigue life in surface induced fracture mode was improved greatly by the roll processing. And there was no difference in the fatigue life by two processing methods. The cause of the improvement fatigue life was considered to be influence of compressive residual stress gave by the roll processing. The depth from surface of the crack initiation site in interior induced fracture mode was 0.2mm or more, and that depth was an equivalent for the influence layer of compressive residual stress.
