Abstract
By assuming a balance in molar flux at a diffuse interface layer between the solid and liquid with thickness δ, we explain the interfacial instability in the directional solidification of alloys. Since an empirical formula on interfacial energy per mole, γ_m = RT_iδ, was derived, the flux balance can provide new models for capillary-effected phenomena.
