Abstract
In this study, we aim to develop novel cutting tools that had either microscale or nanoscale textures on their surfaces. The texturing of microscale or nanoscale features on a solid surface allows us to control the tribological characteristics of a tool. Textured carbide and PCD tools were developed using femtosecond laser patterning method and turning experiments were performed on aluminum alloys of ADC12 and A390 under various cutting conditions. As a result, reductions in the cutting forces were observed for the textured tools. This effect was remarkable when cutting the ADC12 rather than the A390, which is caused by the characteristics of the work materials. These results indicate that both the textured carbide tool and PCD tool were effective for cutting aluminum alloys.
