Abstract

<p>Crude conceptual design causes feedback from the post-stages in product design which results in economical and time loss. Sophisticated conceptual design is important for preventing such feedback and increasing efficiency, and therefore methodology for computer support of conceptual design is desired. For this purpose, methods for computer modeling of conceptual design data has been actively discussed. However, it is impossible to represent comprehensively behavior, function structure and occurring sequence of functions which are strongly correlated each other. This paper provides a method for unified modeling of those three elements. In a conventional method, integrated modeling of behavior and function was achieved by adding functional meaning to the transition in the Petri net describing behavior. It is possible to represent hierarchical function structure by connecting the transitions of the upper and lower functions with places and arcs. Furthermore, it is possible to also represent order relations among functions by splitting the transition into three ones and assigning the start, meaning and end of the function to them. Application of this new modeling method to an example showed that it is possible to detect improper function structure and order relations and therefore this method is useful for conceptual design support.</p>
