We have measured the relative flow at the midpassage of an unshrouded centrifugal impeller by means of a hot-wire anemometer rotating with the impeller, and discussed the effect of tip leakage on secondary flow, Reynolds stress and energy loss by comparing the results of this measurement with those of previous hot-wire and pitot-tube measurements. Secondary flow in the shrouded impeller appears about the suction-side/shroud corner. In the unshrouded impeller, however, tip leakage interferes with this secondary flow around the middle blade-to-blade near the casing. The Reynolds normal stress is high at the secondary flow region of the shrouded impeller and the interference region between the secondary flow and the tip leakage of the unshrouded impeller. These regions coincide with the loss regions of the shrouded and unshrouded impellers, respectively. The Reynolds shear stress qualitatively follows the eddy viscosity concept. In the unshrouded impeller, however, the distribution of this stress obviously differs from that in the shrouded impeller without the tip leakage.
