The melting of semitransparent material by the absorption of thermal radiation is important to many technological and scientific problems which have been widely investigated numerically and experimentally. However, most of them deal with this phenomenon as one-dimensional melting, neglecting the flow effect during the melting process. In the present paper, radiative melting of ice (semitransparent material) in an open-top rectangular dimple in a substrate is investigated. In the experiment, cement or copper was used as a substrate with a dimple, whose reverse side can be cooled or insulated. Clear or cloudy ice was made in the dimple and was irradiated by a halide lamp from above. In the analysis, general equations were expressed in finite difference schemes and were solved on a supercomputer. Effects of thermal properties of the substrate, black-body temperature of the heat source, thermal condition of the reverse of the substrate, and air bubbles in the ice on the two-dimensional melting process were examined.
