In order to reduce runner stress pulsations effectively, systematic tests and analyses are conducted for three model pump turbines, which are different in the guide vane height and in the runner vane thickness. The results are that 1) after increasing the guide vane height by 40%, the amplitude of the pressure pulsation at the runner periphery under turbine operation which can be considered to represent the main source of the runner stress pulsations is reduced by 20∼30% ; and 2) after increasing the runner vane thickness by 5%, the maximum pump and turbine efficiencies do not change, the turbine discharge decreases in proportion to the runner outlet clearance, and the pump discharge does not change markedly at the same head, but decreases by 5% at the maximum efficiency point and at the Q-H hump point.
