Abstract
The paper studied response of electromyogram (EMG) of sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscles to simulated motion of the car, which is to clarify the possibility of EMG as an indicator of physical load against head rolling. SCM muscles are in both sides of the neck, and play important parts in lateral stability of the head. The experiment is carried out using a driving simulator. Six settings of motion are designed for the experiment. Two kinds of slalom driving are simulated, and white-noise vibration is added respectively in lateral and roll direction of each slalom driving. The noise simulates vibration inside the car body which results from low rigidness of the car body. The experiment is conducted with 9 subjects and the difference of EMG between settings is examined. The result shows that root mean square (RMS) values of EMG increase significantly when the noise vibration is added.
